Title

Glenn Thomas Collection

Description

This collection includes various images taken by Glenn Thomas during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. The images have been donated by his grandson, Curtis Hubbard, of Tampa, Florida.

The first series in this collection includes 15 black and white photographs of scenes in Boone, NC, related to the 1960 blizzard. While the images are noteworthy in their own right for documenting the massive snowfall that affected the area, they also provide glimpses of various buildings around Boone.

Of particular note are two images that show changes being made to the Pastime Theatre building following its closure in the late 1950s. These changes include bricking in the tops of the archways and the second floor windows as part of the conversion of the building to its present appearance (now known as "The Professional Building").

Also visible in these images are numerous Appalachian State Teachers College buildings that no longer stand, as well the Sinclair Gas Station once located on the south side of West King Street in Boone, where the Boone Fire Department now stands. A distant view of the 1904 Watauga County Courthouse, which stood on the site of the present courthouse until 1967, is visible in at least two images.

The name "Blizzard of 1960" is a bit of a misnomer, in that the heavy snowfall was the result of several snow events, each falling on a Wednesday, between February 13 and March 26. A total of 30 inches of snow fell in February, followed by another 51 inches in March, and temperatures remained unusually frigid throughout, making snow removal and melting nearly impossible. Persistent strong winds throughout the period created the blowing snow conditions that probably helped this period earn the "blizzard" moniker.

The second series includes 16 color slides showing the Howard's Knob windmill, a few images of two men at ASU's Center for Instructional Development, and scenes related to two separate graduation ceremonies: Glenda Thomas Hubbard in the 1950s and Sylvia Thomas Catron in the 1960s.
