Mary Ann Lawrence Collection

Description

This collection contains a wide assortment of approximately 500 images related to the Lawrence Family of Boone, NC. Of particular note are a number of images of the dental practice of Dr. Jack D. Lawrence, Sr., and his partner Dr. E. T. "Ted" Glenn, who opened a practice on the second floor of the Appalachian Theatre building in 1950. Images in the collection offer rare views of the interior of this space.

The Mary Ann Lawrence Collection is named for Mary Ann Cheek Lawrence (July 26, 1920-August 17, 2011), who curated the images in this collection for the Lawrence family. Born in Chapel Hill, NC, to J. C. and Effie Tally Cheek, Mary Ann Lawrence was a charter member of the Greenway Baptist Church. A graduate of Chowan Junior College (now Chowan University) and the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina (now UNC-Greensboro), Lawrence was very active in a number of local organizations, including the Daniel Boone Native Gardens and the Gardenerettes Garden Club. She and her husband, Dr. Jack D. Lawrence, had six children: Dr. Beth Lawrence Murray, Susan Lawrence Tumbleston, Martha Lawrence Addison, Sally Lawrence Whitson, Dr. Jack D. Lawrence, Jr., and Jim Lawrence.

Dr. Jack D. Lawrence, Sr. (February 19, 1920-April 7, 2017), was the son of George Monroe Lawrence and Lena Culver Lawrence of Avery County. Dr. Lawrence served in active duty during World War II before settling in Boone. A charter member of the Greenway Baptist Church, Dr. Lawrence also served as president of the North Carolina Baptist Men and as a Watauga County Commissioner, during which time he chaired the county commission. A popular local dentist for 35 years, Dr. Lawrence was also well-known for his love of fox hunting.
