Historical Adams, NC Collection

Historical Adams, NC Collection

This collection was provided to the Digital Watauga Project by Sparky Barnes. It consists of 143 photographs, in both color and black and white. This collection centers around a small area of Watauga County formerly known as Adams, NC. It focuses primarily on the Barnes and Hodges families.

Donor preference for this collection was to provide the Digital Watauga Project directly with scans instead of physical items. Based on that preference, the image scans for this collection are not in line with the Project's current scanning standards and do not allow for extreme detail.

Series 1 consists of two post cards, three color photographs, and 49 black and white photographs set primarily in Watauga County. This series primarily features images of the Margaret and Marion Barnes' family from 1917 into the 1950s. Of note are images of Barnes men during both World War I and World War II and photographs of the Barnes boys at Iron Mountain Lutheran School in Konnarock, VA.

Series 2 consists of three black and white photographs from the 1920s. This series features the family of Ernest M. Hodges in Watauga County.

Series 3 consists of 11 color photographs, one color calendar, and 67 color photographs. The images date from late 1891 until 1961. This series focuses primarily on the Hodges and Barnes families from Adams, NC. Of note within the series are comedic images of the Hodges' women that reflect their unique sense of humor and a 1961 Watauga County Sheriff's Department Calendar from Ernest M. Hodges' time as the Watauga County Sheriff.

Series 4 consists of five black and white photographs taken in Adams, NC. The images show winter scenes of Adams during the 1940s.
