Description

This item is a map of Watauga County, North Carolina created using data from the "State-Wide Highway Planning Survey." The note at the bottom of the map indicates that the map shows the culture as of June 30, 1938 and the roads as of January 1, 1948. There appear to be six dates of reference in the bottom left corner that range from 1938-1948. According to this map, there was only a short section of Highway 421 paved at the time leading into and through Boone town limits. Other major highways are labeled "surface treated" with the remaining roads around the county gravel or dirt. The map shows the neighboring counties around Watauga, which are as follows: Ashe, Wilkes, Caldwell, Avery, and Johnson. Various mountains and their elevations are visible within the map as well.
