Description
Handwritten letter from Bessie Hazel Smith Hodges (1897-1972), Fresno, OH, to Charles Henry Adams (1915-1994), Ft. McClellan, AL, with envelope, dated January 20, 1942. Hodges thanks Adams for the receipt of a "cushion top" and recalls arguments between the two of them when they were younger. Hodges shares news of various family members and requests a photo from Adams.
As reported, Charles Adams' "World War II draft registration card from 1940 shows that he lived on Carolina Avenue in Boone, NC. He was a son of Roby Allen Adams (1865-1941) & Carrie Frances Smith (1882-1950). The writer of the letter is Bessie Hazel Smith Hodges (1897-1972). Bess was a sister to Charles's mother and, therefore, his "Aunt Bess" as the letter indicates. Bess was married to Edward Guy Hodges (1895-1974) in 1919 in North Carolina, and they moved to Coshocton Co., OH in 1920. The postmark on this envelope is Fresno, OH, which is located in Coshocton County. Within the letter, Bess refers to Charles's brother Bernie. This would be Bernard Binette Adams (b. 1917). She also mentions her husband Ed and their children Mabel, Eddie, Jane, and Ruth."

The recipient of this letter was Charles Henry Adams (b. 1915 Watauga Co., NC; d. 1994 Sulphur Springs, AL). His World War II draft registration card from 1940 shows that he lived on Carolina Avenue in Boone, NC. 1917). She also mentions her husband Ed and their children Mabel, Eddie, Jane, and Ruth. All four children were born in Coshocton Co., OH. Mabel Lois Hodges Holden died in 2013 in OH, and Larry Edward "Eddie" Hodges died in 2015, also in OH.
(The "Louise" who wrote the second letter to Charles Adams may have been his sister, Louise Frances Adams Martin [1922-1988]. I do not know her husband's first name, but perhaps it is the "Allen" who she mentions.)
Charles Henry Adams has relatives who still live in Watauga County, including grandnieces Meleah Rush Coffey (wife of Chuck Coffey) and Jamie Rush Critcher (wife of Randy Critcher). They are granddaughters of Charles's sister, Daisy Adams Rush, and could perhaps provide additional information."
