Description

1970s-era postcard showing an aerial view of the US Department of Energy's windmill generator atop Howard's Knob. The windmill was installed in early 1979 and dedicated in July 1979. Its drive train failed in 1981, and the DOE removed it from Howard's Knob in 1983. No message is contained on the postcard, which has never been postmarked.

Howard Knob, overlooking Boone, N. C., was chosen by the U. S. Department of Energy as the site for the world's largest wind generator. The Blue Ridge Electric membership corporation will operate the "windmill" and the generated electricity will be fed into the Blue Ridge Electric distribution system.
