Flood Damage to Railroad Tracks, August 1940

Title

Flood Damage to Railroad Tracks, August 1940

Subject

Linville River Railway, 1940 Flood, Paul Weston

Description

This image shows a washout of railroad tracks near a small house--possibly the Linville River Railway as it flows near the Watauga River--following the August 1940 flood. Damage to the rail infrastructure is severe, with ties missing completely near the left side of the image and the tracks themselves essentially sliding into the river as a result of the damage. The Linville River Railway was so badly damaged by the flood that the portion of the route to Boone was never rebuilt.
