Portrait of George William Horton

Title

Portrait of George William Horton

Subject

George William Horton, Palmer Blair, Boone

Description

This photographic portrait of George William Horton (1920-1973) by Palmer Blair--likely dating to the early 1950s--was mixed in with other Blair materials found in the George Flowers Collection. It has since been repatriated to the Palmer Blair Collection by agreement with the donors of each collection. According to numerous old Boone residents, and various newspaper accounts, George was a notorious character on Boone's streets. Horton died during a blizzard in December 1973. His obituary can be found in the Watauga Democrat on December 17, 1973, along with fond remembrances by Rob Rivers in his "King Street" column on December 20, 1973. A note on the rear of the portrait's matte titles the piece "Men" and indicates "by Palmer Blair, Palmer's Studio, Boone, NC."
