Description

This color slide features the front horses of the Wagon Train parade in Boone, North Carolina. Several onlookers stand along West King Street. The Wagon Train, which traveled over multiple days from Wilkes County to Boone, began as a celebration of the 300th anniversary of the founding of North Carolina in 1963. The event was held every summer until 1974. A brief revival occurred in the mid-1980s but was not sustained. The storefronts of Burgess Furniture and Yogi's Submarine and Sandwich Shop are visible in the background. The businesses were housed in the Hodges Building (left) and the Qualls Library Building (right), more recently home to Strand Beads and Jewelry and Wolfie's Deli, respectively.
