Description

A color slide showing a view down King Street (facing west), during the Wagon Train parade in Boone, North Carolina. The Wagon Train, which traveled over multiple days from Wilkes County to Boone, began as a celebration of the 300th anniversary of the founding of North Carolina in 1963. The event would be held every summer until 1974. Along the right side of the street, Hunt's Department Store (now Mast General Store) can be seen. Along the left (in left to right order), the Horton Building, Boone Drug, Cato's, Belk's, Crest, the Watauga County Bank, and Farmer's Hardware can be seen. Among the riders in the parade are the three pictured in image 14 of this series. According to Gary Boye, Charley and the Angel and Cinderella (seen on the theatre marquee in other images in this series) played at the Appalachian Theatre 6/28 thru 6/30 in 1973, indicating the date of this image.
