Title

Unknown Parade, Boone, NC, 1960

Subject

Parade, Homecoming, McClung's, Horton Building, Boone Drug Store, Hamby and Winkler Building, A&P, Belk's, Crest, Watauga County Bank, Appalachian State Teacher's College, King Street, Professional Building

Description

This image shows large crowds gathered along King Street to watch an unidentified parade proceeding east along the street. Buildings visible, left to right, are the Horton Building (housing McClung's), the Boone Drug Store Building, the Hamby and Winkler Building (still housing a grocery store, likely the A&P), Belk's, Crest, and the Watauga County Bank Building. This parade may have been the ASTC Homecoming Parade in 1960. The date is generated from the presence of McClung's, a short-lived five and dime (1959-1960) in Boone. The presence of the new concrete panel facade on the old Pastime Theatre in the distance--by then known as the Professional building--demonstrates the 1960 date.
