Land of Oz Signage

Title

Land of Oz Signage

Subject

Land of Oz, Theme Park, Advertising, Beech Mountain, Wizard of Oz

Description

A color slide showing a close-up of a painting depicting the Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, and Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. This was likely part of an advertisement for the Land of Oz theme park in Beech Mountain. The Land of Oz, opened in 1970 at Beech Mountain, was the brainchild of Grover Robbins and the Carolina Caribbean Corporation (who were responsible for two other tourist attractions in the area, Hound Ears Club and Tweetsie Railroad). Initially a success, the Land of Oz was soon beset by trouble: the bankruptcy of the Carolina Caribbean Company, arson, vandalism, and mismanagement. The theme park would finally close in 1980, with re-openings for special events continuing to the present day.
