Justice Abe Fortas was appointed to the Supreme Court of the United States and invited to become an honorary initiate of Phi Delta Phi by Rufus Edmisten. The photograph appears to be at that initiation based on other items on the scrapbook page. This item was found on the bottom left of page 24 in Rufus Edmisten's scrapbook labeled "Birth-Appointment on Ervin's staff, Volume 1."
