Description

This image depicts a newspaper clipping from the Charlotte Observer. At the top of the page, "Horn in the West. N (Historical Drama)" is written in red pen next to a check mark. Under the title of the article, "Charlotte Observer 7/2/72" is written in regular pen. The clipping contains two articles and an image. The first article is "The Indians Appear Real: The New 'Horn In The West' Shows Our Forebears As People” by Dick Banks. This article discusses the newly edited Horn in the West play. The new revisions of the play were written by Richard Ayers with assistance from Kermit Hunter. Banks briefly mentions that hurricane Agnes hit the production fairly hard, but that the revised play was well received. There is also a brief discussion of Ayers's efforts to address criticisms of the depiction of Native Americans in the play by attempting to make the costumes and choreography more realistic. He also discusses changes to the music to make it more compelling. The other article is "It's Hectic When 3 Plays Are Rehearsed At Once." The back of the clipping continues the article with Banks describing the process of rewriting the Horn in the West show and his attempt to avoid mountaineer stereotypes. He also looks at the limited funding that the director, Richard Ayers, faced in his production of the Horn in the West.
