Description

This letter is eight connected pages, and cannot be separated. Pages were scanned in the letter order. Letter is from Charles Boyd at Camp Crane to "Mrs. N. L. Mast" (Addie Horton Mast) in Watauga County, North Carolina. Charles Boyd thanks Addie Horton Mast for the letters she and her daughter have written to him three weeks prior. He expresses regret for not being able to respond sooner, but indicated that he struggled to answer them. He tells of how he used to call Tom "Tommie" and describes his work ethic and personality. He describes for Addie Horton Mast the chain of events leading to the death of Thomas Sims Mast, he complained of a headache one morning and was taken to the infirmary where he eventually spiked a fever and was taken to Allentown Hospital. He references that Major Martin would keep him updated on how he was and that there wasn't much hope for him in the last two days. He indicated that Mr. Mast arrived a couple days before Tom passed away. He also describes some of his life leading up to being with the Ambulance Company and eventually Section 547 as a sergeant.
