Description

This image appears to show the infamous 1960 Blizzard. This image shows two large military helicopters sitting in the snow on Appalachian State University's campus. The helicopters have "Army" and "U.S. Army" written on the side of them. A soldier can be seen standing in front of the closest one. Founders Hall is visible in the background, past evergreen trees, with Howard's Knob visible past that. This is likely from when the 1960 Blizzard cut off travel in the High Country and the U.S. military was needed to bring in supplies. This slide has a processing date of March 1960.
